The Cedar Lounge Revolution

There’s little that gladdens my heart than a by-election and lo and behold, there’s the faintest possibility we’re going to see one soon. Not a strong possibility, but a possibility nonetheless.

And before we get to that it’s a gloomy fact of political life, or perhaps it’s not so gloomy, that by-elections do intervene in the political calendar in a manner which has unforeseen and unpredictable consequences. This can operate in any number of ways, consider the different outcomes for the then opposition of the George Lee victory or the Pearse Doherty victory. Or indeed, and i’ve wondered about this subsequently, the Maureen O’Sullivan victory in Dublin Central. It wasn’t that the latter directly forged a path for the subsequent tranche of Independents and small party TDs – she was, after all, reclaiming Tony Gregory’s seat, but it can’t have hurt and in actually taking place might have brought the…
