Pride's Purge

(satire – I think)

Controversial plans to blast breeding pairs of peasants were abruptly dropped by the Government yesterday, 24 hours after plans by the government to cull them were extensively highlighted and criticised in The Independent.

The Wildlife Minister, Richard Benyon, a millionaire landowner and keen member of the shooting community, had sanctioned a research project to investigate how best to prevent out-of-control breeding of young peasants in the country. The plan involved destroying peasant nests – known as ‘housing estates’ – by blasting them with shotguns and removing the indigenous wildlife which lives there to other wilder regions of the country – such as Liverpool.

The reason given for the policy was to protect nearby areas which are populated with richer varieties of wildlife – especially those species most at risk of extinction such as Toffs, Tories and Snobs.

However, critics say that Mr Benyon’s agreeing to…

If boycott calls are heeded and complicit Israeli cultural entities have their international events cancelled, the message gets through to Israel that it can not carry on with “business as usual” while killing and dispossessing Palestinians, and defying their right to return.

Disruption of Israeli theater group in London, as BDS proves a win-win strategy

Activists unfurl a banner against Habima inside the Globe theater  (Tony Greenstein)

Israel’s national theater company performed The Merchant of Venice at Shakespeare’s Globe in London yesterday and Monday. But Habima’s presence was fiercely contested for months in advance, and both performances were disrupted by Palestine solidarity activists in the audience.

Around 15 activists managed to protest, mostly silently, during the Monday show. They were removed by heavy-handed security guards, apparently hired by the venue especially to protect the Israeli company.

Campaigners working as part of the boycott, divestment and sanctions (BDS)…

AL-KHALIL, (PIC)– Jewish settlers attacked Palestinian farmers near Yatta, south of Al-Khalil, on Wednesday night, local sources said.

Quds Press quoted Ratib Jabour, the coordinator of popular and national committees in Yatta, as saying that a big number of masked settlers threw rocks at the farmers.

He said that the farmers succeeded in forcing the settlers out of their fields.

Jabour denounced the repeated settlers’ “terrorist attacks” on Palestinian land to the east of Yatta, which he said aimed at terrorizing the citizens out of their lands to annex them to their settlement.

RAMALLAH, GAZA,(PIC)– Israeli occupation authority has renewed, on Wednesday, the administrative detention of the MP Abdel Rahman Zeidan for another six months one day before his due release.

The change and reform bloc stated in a statement that the occupation has renewed the administrative detention of the MP Abdel Rahman Zeidan for six months for the third time running under the pretext that he poses a real threat to the safety and security of Israel.

The occupation forces had arrested thirty Palestinian MPs and ministers most of them affiliated with Hamas. They are being held in administrative detention, led by Dr. Aziz Dweik, speaker of the Palestinian Legislative Council.

The International Campaign for Releasing the Abducted MPs called on the international parliamentary organizations to pressure the occupation to stop the Palestinian MPs’ administrative detention.

The MP Moshir Masri, head of the campaign, confirmed…

Joint Statement, Addameer Prisoner Support and Human Rights Association, Physicians for Human Rights-Israel and Al-Haq

Jaffa-Ramallah, 31 May 2012 – The health conditions of Mahmoud Sarsak, currently on his 74th day of hunger strike, and Akram Rikhawi, currently on his 50th day of hunger strike, are rapidly deteriorating.
Despite the urgency of their conditions, the Israeli Prison Service (IPS) is still denying access to independent doctors from Physicians for Human Rights-Israel (PHR-Israel) to visit them and refusing to transfer them to civilian hospitals for proper treatment. Judge Abraham Talgave of the Israeli District Court gave the IPS as much as a 12-day period from yesterday, 30 May, to permit the access of the independent doctors to both prisoners. PHR-Israel, Addameer and Al-Haq are outraged by the IPS’ blatant breach of health rights and by the Israeli District Court’s disregard of the immediate danger to their lives.

GAZA,(PIC)– Hamas spokesman , Sami Abu Zuhri, said that the Israeli occupation aims behind its reports about the growing military strength of the movement to cover any coming aggression on the Gaza strip.

The occupation is trying to publish reports and news about the growing strength of Hamas and the Palestinian factions in the Gaza Strip in an attempt to provide a pretext for any attack on Gaza or targeting Palestinian resistance men, Abu Zuhri said.

He added that the Palestinian factions are no longer deceived with these lies, saying these tricks have become exposed to the resistance factions and to the international community as well.

He pointed out that Hamas’s top priorities are to achieve national unity and to reinforce the steadfastness of the Palestinian people as well as to get Arab and international support for the Palestinian cause and people.

Right – I have no expectations that my girlfriends will read this but if they do, I apologise for liberally dipping into our love-lives.

What I actually wanted to write about, or rather begin with was this, a friend of mine was discussing her ideal guy. (Why? I have no idea, it seems like a subject we all circle back to, with frightening regularity. ‘We’ in this instance refers chiefly to my friends and I, although I guess you can see the implications in the wider world – music, film, art… basically culture, we are all just a bit too obsessed with love and sex.)

Anyway my lovelorn friend told about her ideal guy – her ‘prince charming’. Aussie. Tall. Sexy. Older. Funny. Didn’t have a stupid name. And the best bit of all, he actually existed. She’d gone drinking with him and their mates. All pretty perfect.

Accept he…
